The death toll from the SAN Antonio, Texas, massacre of illegal immigrants rose to 53 after a suspected truck driver posed as a victim and tried to escape, Reuters reported Wednesday.  The truck driver faces up to life in prison or the death penalty if convicted on multiple charges, a U.S. federal court said Wednesday.

The truck driver behind the immigrant rampage has reportedly been identified as 45-year-old Homero Samorano Jr., of Texas.  Zamorano was arrested near the scene of the attack on Tuesday after he tried to escape posing as the victim.  On The 29th, another man, Christian Martinez, 28, was arrested as a possible accomplice of Samorano’s.  A day earlier, police detained two Mexican men in connection with the incident near a house where multiple guns were found.

Zamorano’s van was found Thursday with nearly 100 people packed inside. It had no water and no air conditioning.  The death toll now stands at 53, making it one of the worst migrant deaths in the US in recent years.
