Nearly 800,000 people have signed petitions calling for the impeachment of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas following the Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. The petition says Mr Thomas’s reversal of abortion rights and his wife’s plot to overturn the 2020 presidential election show he cannot be an impartial judge.

The liberal advocacy group MoveOn filed the petition, noting that Thomas was among the judges who denied the existence of a constitutional right to abortion, The Hill reported. The petition also attacks Thomas’s wife for allegedly conspiring to overturn the 2020 election. “Events have shown that Thomas cannot be an impartial Supreme Court justice. Thomas was more concerned with covering up his wife’s attempt to overturn the 2020 presidential election. Thomas must resign or he must be investigated and impeached by Congress.” By the evening of July 1 local time, more than 786,000 people had signed the petition.

The report notes that Thomas’ current wife, Virginia Thomas, has expressed support for former President Trump. Virginia has publicly endorsed Donald Trump and disavowal of President Joe Biden’s election as the US Congress investigates riots on Capitol Hill. Virginia also corresponded with Trump’s lawyer, who was in charge of drafting a memo about plans to overturn the 2020 presidential election.

U.S. lawmakers, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a Democrat, said any justice who “misled” someone on abortion rights should face consequences, including impeachment, according to the report. On June 24, the US Supreme Court overturned roe v. Wade, a case that established abortion rights at the federal level nearly half a century ago, meaning that a woman’s right to abortion is no longer protected by the US Constitution. Conservative justices Thomas, Alito, Gorsuch, Kavanaugh and Barrett, who supported overturn of Roe v. Wade, avoided the question of whether they would overturn the case or indicated they did not support overturning the precedents in their previous confirmation hearings. But they have been criticised in the wake of the ruling.
